Narn i Chin Hurin Characters by elontirien Narn i Chin Hurin Characters by elontirien
Narn i Chîn Húrin~ “Tale of the Children of Húrin”

This has been my favorite story since it destroyed my 12-year-old soul eight years ago.
Recently, I reread it—and it’s no less affecting.

So I’ve decided to take on a concept art mini-project illustrating it and pretending it’s a movie. :dummy:

Tolkien’s writings of the first age leave a lot of room for interpretation with most secondary and minor characters, so this is simply my take on them. Turin, his best buddy, and his little sis have more complete concepts than the others, since they were done first.
I don’t know if or when I’ll get around to the rest of the project, but I would love to be able to have a nice set of example works from it. :)

It was based on another story? I'm ashamed that I've never heard of this. What's the legend?

It is inspired by The legend of Kulevro (That is not spelled correctly) From the finnish epic "The Kalevala"

These are absolutely fantastic- probably my favorite illustrations of this story I've seen. I love how expressive they are, in their bodies and faces- Saeros is PERFECT, and I love your Turin and Nienor's range of expressions. :D Great job!

beleg and mablung dont seem to be youngmen and merry, actually in the book they are cold and wise, as a lot of the grey elves. this is a constructive critique im just saying. anyways i loved it.

Yes, most elves that old are cold, but I guess it's just my personal preference to depict them this way. :)
Thank you!

I dunno, I guess coldness is one interpretation, but in reading Children of Hurin, I didn't find them cold at all, especially Beleg. The lengths to which he goes for his friend show the opposite of a cold person, to me. Cold would imply detachment, and he seems to be plenty attached.

I agree 100%. I'm assuming what the person meant by 'cold' is...collected? Reserved? Eh. But then when you think about it, most of the Elves in the Silmarillion are pretty hot-blooded.

They really are very hot-blooded. And I mean, their personalities are open to interpretation, but it always seemed to me that the just "cold and reserved" version is kind of a boring choice for how to see them. XD

Not that I blame the movies, but...I blame the movies. :XD:

Haha, I sort of do too. XD Though I also think that the elves still alive in the third age have cooled down a lot, and gained a certain degree of detachment that the hot-blooded, relatively young elves of the first age have had. Even ones like Beleg, who weren't young at all, hadn't seen and survived the things that the ones still alive in the third age had, and lived during the time when elves were still the dominant people and the holders of destiny, if you will. The third age elves are, I think, already beginning to diminish and detach from Middle-earth, and hand its leadership over to men. So I partially blame the movies, and partially blame people who assume that all elves were always like the ones in the third age.

Good point! I never thought of it that way; it makes a lot of sense. The wars of the third age weren't really theirs.
And I guess that's what makes the first age texts so great; readers get to see them when they're most passionate and involved.

... oh my god. 'since it destroyed my 12-year-old soul eight years ago.' -does some quick head-math- this story destroyed me at about the same time. i've also, in fact, thought i could easily see a movie adaptation of it. so much angst and horror, and you're so right about the leeway left by tolkien's style in the silm. anyway onto the drawings - these are great, i totally don't have to work on my own fanart for this anymore. YOUR GLAURUNG IS EXACTLY AS CREEPY AS I IMAGINED HIM. and morwen and hurin are just love.

If there IS ever to be a movie... oh, man. I just hope it's within our lifetimes.
And thank you! You should still do fanart aaahhh.
